This Month In The Aviary

IT IS NOW WINTER IN MELBOURNE

DURING, JUNE, JULY, AUGUST

AND THE WEATHER IS COOL TO BRISK

Average high for winter in Melbourne is 14 C (57 F) and the average low is 7 C (45 F).

How the months go by so quickly! Winter already. Brrrrr. We have had some foggy mornings. Make sure you check that your indoor area of the aviary is not leaking and that there are no damp areas on the floor. The indoor area needs to be dry and draught free during winter or the Gouldians will catch cold and begin to fall from the perch.

Time also to keep up the mouse bait stations to combat the mice who like to come in from the cold to seek dry shelter and food.

Also spray the birds for mite and lice in the middle of the day so it is not too cold and they have time too to dry off. Don't forget to worm the birds.

I have a few nests going so hopefully they survive the winter. I will check how things are going and remove the nest boxes as winter unfolds. Sometimes I leave them in through to spring but I have already had good numbers bred this year so I will endeavour to wind them up for an early finish.

Good birding to you all and I will see you on the other side of winter for spring
